Materials needed for this unit: graph paper, copies of 4-rectangle chart for problem-solving, rulers, pencils, practice sheets for guided math groups, computers (for practice, blogging and research), guest speakers, copy of The Missing Gator of Gumbo Limbo
Teachers and students will also need to use technology. Teachers should use a smart board for presenting information to students. Students need access to a computer via a computer lab or a center in the room.
Field Trip Opportunities (Subject to Availability):
Jordan Lake- Students can explore the ecosystems through a tour of lake grounds.
Museum of Life and Science: Students will learn about animals and their ecosystems. Students will engage in acitviites related to animals and will learn more about what they need to survive. Students will focus on animals that the museum has and will be able to interact with the various animals
Our fifth grade students are embarking on a journey to learn
how multiplication and division are related and how they tie into the real
world. As a discovery lesson they are learning how to use model drawings of
houses to determine how much flooring and paint are needed for the house. By
doing this they are learning how to multiply numbers to find area of a room or
of a wall. Right now we only have the supplies for the students to be able to
create a drawing of their house that they have designed for the project. With
your help these students can really make their projects come alive.
If given the necessary supplies we will be able to build 3-d
models of these houses for the students to have on display in our school. Not
only will they be able to have this project as a keep sake they will have also
grasped the mathematical concept of area. I am asking that you help me bring in
a few experts from the field of architecture to talk to the students about the
possibilities of careers in the field. This will allow the students to see that
real world connection to area. I have contacted a painter, and flooring person
and an architect. The three have committed to coming in as guest speakers for a
minimal cost. I am also asking for supplies to build 3-d models. This includes
but is not limited to paint, wood or some sort of board, brushes, tile, tools
for sculpting and building, etc.
By having the experts and the supplies we can tie in math to a
real world career and the students can create a new project to learn about area.
Student learning can be greatly enhanced and all students can have the opportunity to feel achievement through creativity. Thank you so much for your consideration in donating these supplies.
