*This is a newsletter that will be posted on our website and sent home with students. The newsletter will be translated into Spanish for Spanish speaking parents.*
Welcome back to school! We are excited to begin a new year with an integrated unit based on the concepts of relationships and change. This unit will last approximately two weeks and will cover the Common Core State Standards listed below. When we have completed this unit, your student should be able to answer the following essential questions:
*Why do humans seek patterns and relationships?
*How does the relationship between multiplication and division relate to the real world?
*Where do we see relationships in the natural world?
Math:
5.NBT.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm
5.NBT.6 Find whole number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit
divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the
relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by
using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models
Science:
5.L.2 Understand the interdependence of plants and animals with their ecosystem
5.L.2.3 Infer the effects that may result from the interconnected relationship of plants and animals to their ecosystem
Technology:
5.SI.1 Apply criteria to determine appropriate information resources for specific topics and resources
Be sure to ask your child about what we are doing in class! If you would like to participate in this unit, we could use graph paper for several activities throughout the unit. In addition, if you are or know an architect or general contractor, we are looking for some engaging guest speakers to visit our classroom. Thanks in advance for your help!
